Clive Depot restored to original 1882 design
The coming of the railroad is
the basic factor for the establishment of the community and later the City
of Clive. Without it, it is almost certain that this area would not exist,
as we know it today.
This was a farming community of about 20 families in
the area. When trains were taken across country, depots were the main
order of their business. Stopping off places to take on water, fuel and
business product. If you check the map in the Depot you can see the
location of the depot, a water tower and a stockyard, where cattle could
be loaded. The depot was first established in 1882 and from there the
community called Clive was established. The first General Store was built
where Bruegger’s now sits and for a while had a competitor with the
establishment of the Swanson General Store. Mail came to the community
from the trains and one could board the train from Clive to points north,
east or west. At one time more than 60 trains were passing through Clive
for locations destined across the United States. Now only the ones
carrying cargo to factories along the line give a whistle at our crossing
at 86th Street. The depot is no longer needed and one must go
to other locations to catch a passenger train.

Caboose -- Donated to
the Society for posterity as they are no longer used at the back of trains
today.
Swanson Memorial Park may
be small in size but it is huge when representing Clive’s History. The
park its self has been in place much longer than the Historical Society.
Mildred Swanson had indicated that the property would be left to the City
upon her death and had established the park by placing a marker (a large
stone) in the southwest corner of her yard. She was considered by many as
the "unofficial" historian of Clive for many, many years. She
was a Board member of the Historical Society and was certain that the City
and Society considered the old Clive Depot, which sat across the street
from her home, as the primary "project" for restoration. And of
course, at the time, she was correct.

Memory Lane -- Brick Walk -- Fund Raiser
Our current "fund raiser" is the brick walk
that leads from the parking lot, past the caboose on the north and
connects to the decking of the depot. You may purchase a brick for a
DONATION of $50.00 to the society. It is a way to leave a memory of a
loved one or your Family name for posterity. You need not be a resident of
Clive or have any contact with Clive to participate in this effort.
The older, darker brick surrounding the walk is brick
that was part of the original paving surrounding the depot when located
across the street, north of the rail line facing south. When the depot was
used as a storage facility, the brick had been removed and piled on one
side of the building. It seemed proper to find a way to make use of the
original paving in our new paving.
If you are interested in purchasing a brick for the brick walk please

Swanson House, restored to the original General
Store, est. 1911 ... Representation of Clive, 1915.
The General Store has
acquired several more artifacts since the last open house. To those
donators – we are very grateful for your generosity.
However, there are several items that are needed to
help fill in the shelves as far as grocery products. We are searching for
original tins that can be used as resource material. If you have such an
item that we could take a picture of please contact Linda – 223-5003. We
are also currently collecting empty tin cans of various sizes. Cans have
not changed all that much since the establishment of our time period of
1915. Therefore we can use current style cans and put reproduction labels
on them for viewing/stocking purposes. We are also searching for the
following bottles. Large: Syrup, Vinegar, Mustard, Catsup, Oil, Olive Oil.
Small: Vanilla, Lemon Extract, Mustard, Catsup. Jars for Honey, Jam,
Jelly, Olives and Pickles. These are a few of the items that we know were
sold in this General Store.
Any other items that we can use as documentation or
resource is also appreciated.
It is hoped and desired that within the next year the
buildings will be open to the public on a regular schedule. Members and
volunteers are needed for that to happen however. Interpreters are
especially needed for the Store and Depot. The public may view the
facilities by appointment at this time.
The office and meeting room is now available for
General Meetings for the Clive Historical Society Membership as well as
the Board Meetings for the Officers. This is indeed a new addition to the
facility and greatly needed for the on going efforts of the Clive
Historical Society as a whole.
